{"id":761,"date":"2024-08-04T21:17:01","date_gmt":"2024-08-04T19:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dont-panic.cc\/capi\/?p=761"},"modified":"2024-08-04T21:17:01","modified_gmt":"2024-08-04T19:17:01","slug":"goo-gl-url-shortener-shutting-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dont-panic.cc\/capi\/2024\/08\/04\/goo-gl-url-shortener-shutting-down\/","title":{"rendered":"goo.gl URL shortener shutting down"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dont-panic.cc\/capi\/2005\/05\/20\/short-urls-future-loss-of-knowlege\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7\">One of the very first posts back in 2005<\/a> on this blog was me warning about the dangers if too much knowledge (especially in e-mails, newsgroups [back then], Twitter [now], etc.) is hidden behind URL-shortening services that might<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dont-panic.cc\/capi\/2009\/08\/10\/tr-im-to-be-shut-down\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"246\">shut down<\/a> at any time (category-1)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dont-panic.cc\/capi\/2009\/06\/17\/url-shortening-services-soon-to-be-under-siege\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"231\">taken over<\/a> by malicious actors (category-2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And now it&#8217;s time for a Category-1 problem (again): Google&#8217;s URL shortening service <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">goo.gl<\/a> seems to be shutting down for good <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/07\/18\/googl-links\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to 9to5google<\/a>. It was not possible to add new short-links for quite some time now, but by end of year, it seems that old links will break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s hope Google at least keeps the domain, otherwise this might turn into a category-2 problem.
